About Us
Middlesbrough Mela is celebrating its 19th year in 2009.
The event started in the town centre in 1991 and soon outgrew the venue and made a very positive move to Albert Park, right in the heart of the BEM community. The park has been the recipient of Heritage Lottery funding to restore it to its former glory and the event benefits from the spectacular back drop.
We regularly get up to 30,000 visitors and even last year with torrential rain the event attracted 27,000 people. Middlesbrough Mela is notoriously a completely trouble free event. The event runs from 12 noon until 7 pm. The audiences are growing year on year.
How is Boromela Organised?
The event is organised by Middlesbrough Council in conjunction with the Middlesbrough Mela Steering Group, made up of members of the local community.
The Mela Management Committee gratefully acknowledges the generous support from Middlesbrough Council Culture and Tourism and Sports Development Departments, Northern Rock Foundation, British Heart Foundation, Cleveland Police, Healthy Towns, Lebara Mobile Communications, Middlesbrough Cohesion Partnership, Middlesbrough Community Councils, University of Teesside, our media partners the Evening Gazette and TFM, plus all the advertisers in this brochure and on the big screen.
Thanks also to the members of the Middlesbrough Mela Management Committee – Shamal Biswas, Judith Croft, Rob Guest, Diane Harker (Sports Mela Co-ordinator), Bob Eastwood, Naweed Hussain, Shahda Khan, Kash Patel (Main Stage Programmer), Satnam Singh, Steve Thompson, Sheully Uddin and Zafar Uddin (Chair), and to the Albert Park team, JR Bowes and to Teri Sayers (Mela Co-ordinator) for their contribution and invaluable support to the organisation of the event.
