Middlesbrough Mela is 21 years old this year. To help us celebrate this fabulous event we’re going to revisit some of the earlier years. So this is how it began in 1991. Click here to see the original programme (right click to download the PDF)
The Mela started life in Central Gardens in the centre of Town and that year some of the performers were Naya Saaz, Sagar of Yorkshire and Abdul Hamid and Party.
Please come back for more Mela memories in the weeks leading up to the event on the 16th and 17th of July
First Act Announced

MIDDLESBROUGH MELA is proud to announce PUNJABI No. 1 as one of the main dance acts for 2011.
However this is no ordinary bhangra dance troupe – This is a dance troupe with a difference…. They are from SCOTLAND and no they wont be wearing kilts!!
Punjabi No.1 was established 12 years ago to promote Punjabi Culture amongst Scottish born Punjabi’s. The group mainly performed Bhangra, Giddha and Dhol playing, however, the demand over the years has varied, so now the group incorporates Bollywood and Hip-Hop dancing.
Having already performed at events such as the MOBO awards, the handover of the Commonwealth Games and the BBCs Children in Need, the group are firmly established for thier contribution to Asian Arts and Music.
Middlesbrough Mela get ready to twist those light bulbs, pat the dog and rev up your motorbikes as you witness the spectacle that is Punjabi No. 1
